Apple's 2022 iPad Pro: What to Expect

Apple is working on a next-generation version of the iPad Pro, and while there are no major design updates that we know of, there are some new features that are worth looking forward to.
This guide aggregates everything that we know about the 2022 iPad Pro so far based on the rumors that we've heard.
Mini-LED Display
Apple last year introduced an updated 12.9-inch iPad Pro with mini-LED display technology, and in 2022, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro will continue to use the technology. There were rumors that Apple would also update the 11-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED display, but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen because of supply and cost constraints.
Apple calls the mini-LED display of the iPad Pro a "Liquid Retina XDR display" that offers improved dynamic range with true-to-life details, vivid colors, and HDR. The current display in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro uses over 10,000 LEDs across the back of the display, allowing for up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, and a 1 million-to-1 contrast ratio.
Display analyst Ross Young has said that the 11-inch iPad Pro won't get the mini-LED upgrade after all because the 12.9-inch iPad is selling well enough that Apple doesn't need to add mini-LED to the smaller tablet. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also said that mini-LED display technology is too expensive to be added to the 11-inch iPad Pro this year.
M2 Chip
The 2021 iPad Pro models adopted the same M1 chip used in the MacBook Air, Mac mini, and 13-inch MacBook Pro rather than continuing to use an A-series chip as typical iPads do.
That put iPad Pro performance on par with Apple's Macs, Apple is rumored to be planning to stick with Mac chips for the pro-level iPads. Apple introduced the M2 chip in the 2022 MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, and is expected to use the same chip in the 2022 iPad Pro update.
The M2 chip features an 8-core CPU and an 8 or 10-core GPU.
MagSafe Charging
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the next-generation version of the iPad Pro will support MagSafe wireless charging, much like the iPhone.
Apple could be planning to add a glass back to the iPad Pro and has been testing such a feature, but due to concerns about breakability, Apple might instead opt for a larger Apple logo made of glass that would facilitate wireless charging.
If Apple opts for the glass Apple logo, it would presumably have magnets underneath and a MagSafe charger would be able to align with those magnets for quick and easy charging. One of the iPads that Apple is testing is said to have MagSafe with stronger magnets than the magnets in the iPhone, and it is also said to allow for faster wireless charging speeds.
Reverse Wireless Charging
Along with MagSafe wireless charging, the next-generation iPad Pro could support reverse wireless charging capabilities, which would let the iPad be used to charge iPhones, AirPods, and other accessories by laying them on the back of the iPad.
New Connectors?
Japanese site Mac Otakara claims that the next-generation iPad Pro models will feature new four-pin connectors at the top and bottom of the device, which would be separate from the smart connector. It is not clear why Apple would add new connectors, but the site suggests the connectors could "assist in powering peripherals" that connect to the USB-C port.
A New Apple Pencil?
We've heard rumors that Apple is working on a new version of the Apple Pencil, but most of that information dates back to early 2021 and we haven't heard anything since then. It's unclear if we're actually going to get a new Apple Pencil.
There were rumors that there would be a black Apple Pencil option back in 2021, but that didn't happen, so it might not have been accurate.
Titanium Chassis
DigiTimes says that Apple is working on a titanium chassis for the iPad, which would replace the aluminum used in the current models, but titanium is an expensive material so this may be unlikely or a feature limited to the highest-end iPads.
Release Date
Upgraded 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with M2 chip are expected to come out in September or October.
Future iPad Pros
The 2022 iPad Pro models will continue to use standard LCD and mini-LED display technology, but Apple is working on OLED technology for future Macs and iPads. Apple could add an OLED iPad to its lineup starting in 2024, and the iPad Pro could perhaps be the first iPad to adopt an OLED display.

Everything we know so far about the iPad Pro 2022

We're expecting an iPad Pro 2022, even if Apple's Peek Performance event in March came and went with only a new iPad Air 5 making an appearance.
Still, Apple has revised its premium tablet every year since it was introduced (excluding 2019). With last year's iPad Pro being one of the biggest updates ever, we're excited to see what Apple has in store for 2022. Rumors are currently few and far between. However, with a launch date possibly coming soon, we'll hopefully hear more about the new iPad Pro in the near future.
Here’s everything we know about the iPad Pro 2022 so far, as well as a wishlist on the off chance Apple is in a listening mood.
iPad Pro 2022 latest rumors (updated August 8)
Apple could bring an upgrade to the Smart Connector of iPad Pro 2022 according to this rumor, that makes it connect more easily with accessories and could hint at wireless charging as well.
If you were hoping for OLED displays on the iPad Pro 2022, bad news. The first iPad Pros with OLED may not arrive until 2024. But would it be worth waiting for instead of buying a current or upcoming iPad?
A new iPad Pro 2022 leak just tipped three big upgrades: wireless charging, a better camera and an M2 chip.
As well as an alleged M2 chip on the inside, the next iPad Pro may come in a new 14-inch size with extra default storage and RAM.
Apple may end up putting an M2 Pro chip inside an iPad says one source, and the iPad Pro 2022 seems like the most likely candidate.
iPad Pro 2022 design
The 2022 iPad Pro range is, once again, expected to come in 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes. But design changes appear to be afoot for the iPad Pro 2022, and we’ve heard of a couple so far.
The most recent rumor suggests that the chassis of the new iPad Pro 2022 will remain largely similar to its predecessor barring a change from a three-pin Smart Connector to a four-pin one that could be found on the top and on the bottom side edges. This could help power accessories easily and could hint at wireless charging as well.
Like the rumored Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra and, indeed, the 2021 MacBook Pro, Apple could be adding a notch to the iPad Pro’s design. However, a more recent report from 9to5Mac
(opens in new tab)
says that while Apple is considering this move, the decision is not set in stone.

Arguably a notch makes a bit more sense here than on the company’s high-end laptops, as the iPad Pro uses FaceID for authentication, which makes for a sizable camera footprint. All the same, it’s likely to prove unpopular even if adding a notch does result in even thinner bezels.
The second design tweak we’ve heard talk of, via Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, is a glass back for the possible introduction of wireless charging. While this has long been a feature of Apple’s non-SE iPhones, there’s talk that this will go a step further with reverse-wireless charging, meaning it will be able to top up the battery of other devices such as your iPhone, Apple Watch or AirPods. That sounds like a further step on the rumored long-term goal for devices to charge each other over the air (though that’s years away).
Apple is rumored to be working on a ginormous 15-inch iPad to take on larger smart screens, and its display components partner BOE has adapted its factory to make 15-inch OLED displays, but this larger panel is said to be at least a couple of years away. But in the meantime, the iPad 2022 model could be getting a 14-inch version, says one leaker. As well as extra screen space, this model could come with more storage and RAM capacity by default, allowing for enhanced overall performance too.
The rumors for OLED displays on the iPad Pro say they won't arrive until 2024. So it looks like we'll stick with an LCD 11-inch model and a mini LED 12.9-inch model like we got with the 2021 edition.
iPad Pro 2022 specs
Early tips from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo as well as a tip from a regular leaker pointed to the smaller 11-inch iPad Pro tablet adopting mini-LED screen tech this time around. The feature isn’t entirely new, having debuted in 2021, but it was exclusive to the 12.9-inch models, which cost significantly more. This will hopefully allow more buyers to enjoy the deeper blacks and higher brightness that independently lit pixels provide.
However, Kuo has backed off that claim as of late, and now display analyst Ross Young says an 11-inch iPad Pro with mini-LED is unlikely. Apparently, the 12.9-inch model is doing well enough to where Apple will likely want to keep that feature exclusive to its most expensive tablet.
A separate report from 9to5Mac
(opens in new tab)
says that the iPad Pro could be powered by Apple's upcoming M2 chip. The Apple M2 chip was announced at WWDC 2022 and appears in both the MacBook Air 2022 and entry-level MacBook Pro 2022. However we may even see an M2 Pro version of the iPad Pro according to analyst Jeff Pu's claims of Apple's new 3-nanometre chip getting used in an iPad later this year.
As for cameras, the same 9to5Mac report says that the iPad Pro 2022 could feature a similar camera setup to the iPhone 13, which would give it impressive image quality along with features like Cinematic mode for video. We've also heard the next iPad Pro may ship with support for wireless charging, which would be a welcome upgrade.
